Ok, I thought I should get a thread going where people can post questions about how to use the message board or about a specific function, and I also thought we should have a thread where people can put complaints if they see something that isn't working so that I can check into any problems. If you are having a problem check this thread and it may be something which has already been covered.

The first bug to have been encountered here was the problem with people not staying logged in when it says it will log you in automatically. I looked into this and made a change and hopefully this has now been fixed. Everyone please check at the top and make sure you are logged in (if you are not it will say 'Log in').

If you have other questions, post them here or be sure to check the FAQ at the top, which appears to be pretty vague on some things, but which might help, you never know.

I have a question. How did fhqwhgads get such a huge avatar?

That sounds like weird euphemism, but it's not.

You know, I was wondering about that too, but I just figured it out. I think everyone else (you and myself anyway) used the "Upload Avatar from a URL" option in our profile selection, so that way the image was re-hosted here on whoneedsice.com What fhqwhgads did is just linked to an off-site picture which happened to be larger than the 150x150 pixel dimensions that the message board specifies. Apparently this is just how this message board software is. Would you guys like larger avatars? The reason I had them set at 150 pixels squared is because if you start using pictures that are too large they can push the message board columns around and make it look either real ugly or confusing to people. fhqwhgads's avatar isn't doing this though, so I could up the size of the allowable avatars to 250x250 if you'd prefer.

The danger with linking to any picture off-site (known as "hotlinking") is that it's generally considered rude because you're using someone else's bandwidth, and if they notice and get pissed off they can change that image to anything they want and that's what will be displayed on your page from now on. A good example of this is something I saw while perusing Google's image search for images from Super Troopers the other day and came across this image where someone had clearly become upset at others hotlinking to his picture. On our message board here, we're not going to be pulling enough traffic to make anyone upset or probably even make them notice, so I wouldn't really worry about that.

It should be pointed out, however, that because many of us (myself included) frequently will hotlink pictures when we just post them in the forums, that for some pictures that are hosted on certain sites they can set permissions on the picture to not be displayed if it is hotlinked, or to show a placeholder image instead (these will frequently look like something saying "image hosted by tripod" or "bandwidth exceeded" or something). If I've seen any like that here, I've tried to just download those pictures and upload them to my own site and just substitute that link instead.

I'm really long-winded, but hopefully that answered your question?

It's like driving a Hummer, though. Is it really necessary? It's just a little picture by your name.

Then again, it's a sweet picture.

Then again, J-Cruise had a SWEET picture of a bunch of wookies hugging Han and he went and changed it.

My avatar is plain bizarre, and the most bizarre thing about it (odder than the acid stare of the bear) is the fact that it came from the official website of South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson.

We were starting to get so many topics going (which is really really great everyone Mr. Green ) so I went ahead and put a limit on how many topics would be displayed on the main page. Currently only the 25 most recently responded to topics will be displayed on the first page, and older topics will get bumped to the second page, and then the third page, and so on. So if you're looking for an older topic that nobody's responded to in a while, check the older pages (up in the top right or down at the bottom right of the page where it says 'Go to page'), or use the Search function at the top of the page. If you guys think that there should be more or less topics displayed per page, let me know, but 25 seemed like a good number. Also, I have it currently set so that if we get more than 25 responses to a topic it will create a second page of responses there. If you guys think that's too many or too few, let me know. This is everyone's board, so you guys decide if there's something about it that bugs you. Thanks Mr. Green

Why not have an unlimited list of topics on the top page? It's easier to just roll down to see them all. Just wondering.

Well, I actually do have to put some number in the space where it asks how many topics before it goes to the second page, but I could make that number say, 5000 or something. The thing with that is that in this first week here we've already got 35 topics going here, with more being added every day. Imagine if we get that each week (we may get more per week, you never know), after a couple weeks we're gonna have a hundred or two hundred topics on the main page. The more that's on that page, the longer it's gonna take to load the page, and also I would assume that would get more confusing to anyone who comes to look at the topics. If that's what everyone wants, I can do that, and then if we change our minds we can change it later. You have to realize that even with it set the way it is, the topics that are at the top of the first page are the ones that were most recently responded to; so if you went to the second page and found an old topic that nobody commented on and you posted a response then it would suddenly be the top item at the top of the main page. I just figured that we're probably not going to be dealing with more than 25 active topics at a time (right now it looks to be more like 5-10 or so) and there's no real reason to clutter the board with old topics that nobody's commenting on anymore. The same thing happened on my blog and John's blog where eventually as conversations die out or run their course they get shuffled off the main page.

I'm totally open to suggestions though. Like I said, this isn't my board, this is our board, so whatever you guys want is fine with me. Just give me some kind of consensus and I'll put it in play. That's what this topic is here for: if you've got complaints or suggestions. What does everyone else think?

Of course I'm a big fan of Don Knotts, but fhqwhgads's new avatar is so huge that it is endangering the time-space continuum. Or something.

Now I see the wisdom of there being perhaps SOME kind of limation to the size of the avatar so we can actually read the text...

Live chat box! Those are either fun or totally ignored. Either way it's more work for Yams, so it must be good.

Unfortunately there's not an easy way to do it, but here is what you do:

When you have the image on your screen, find the key on your keyboard that says 'Print Scrn' and push that. Then, open MS Paint (go to your Start menu, Programs, Accessories, Paint). When you have Paint open, go up to the Edit menu and hit 'Paste'. This will paste the screen shot of your entire screen you took when you hit 'Print Scrn' into Paint. Then you must use the marquee tool (the dotted rectangle) and draw a box around the part you want to keep. Once you have that, go back to the Edit menu and hit 'Cut'. Then go to the File menu and hit 'New' (you don't need to save the other document), then in the new document go to the Edit menu again and hit 'Paste' and this should paste the section of the previous image that you cut (the part you wanted). Then save this image as a jpg file and you now have this image as a picture file you can use. Unfortunately you can't upload this picture to the web, so just email it to me and I'll upload it for you and email you back the address and you can then use it in a post. I know that's a lot of steps, but unfortunately that's the easiest thing for you to do with an image that's created in Flash.

THE LOGO IS AWESOME! It was everything I dreamed of. Too bad you can't include that annoying "neeener neeener neeener" music that plays there.

I'm glad you dig it. If I was more technically proficient I could probably make some cool thing to be animated or play music or something, but alas, I'm not. Maybe I need Scientology Mr. Green

The logo is cool. I think the top of the page would look better without the "Comments, complaints, etc....." text, though. I mean, it's not like we need that information. I guess that's more of a comment for the thread about a site redesign.
